Established by King Haakon VII, this Medal was conferred upon individuals who participated in the 1910-1912 expedition to the South Pole.

The 1910-1912 expedition, led by Roald Amundsen, a Norwegian Explorer, also known as the "Amundsen's South Pole Expedition" was the first expedition to explore the South Pole.

Some versions of the medal were engraved on the reverse with the recipients name.
