History


The British War Medal 1914-20 was instituted by King George V by Army Order in 1919. The British War Medal was awarded to British and Imperial troops and was initially created to commemorate the end of the First World War. However, awarding of the Medal was extended to recognize mine clearing at sea and service in North and South Russia, Eastern Baltic, Siberia, the Black Sea, and in Caspian. Silver Medals were generally issued, while Chinese, Indian, Maltese, and other native personnel were the recipients of the Bronze Medal. It is estimated that 6 500 000 Silver Medals and 110 000 Bronze Medals were issued.

A variety of different naming styles were used and unnamed versions may be encountered.

Clasps were originally approved for wear with the Medal but none were ever issued.
