History

The Scinde Medal was established in 1843 in commemoration of the successful campaign led by Sir Charles Napier in the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-1842). The Medal was awarded in three different versions to British and Indian Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers, and enlisted men of the Honourable East India Company Army, and the British Army who fought in the Scinde Campaign.

The first version was awarded in recognition of participation in the Battle of Meenaee on February 17, 1843, and the second version was awarded in recognition of service in the Battle of Hyderabad on March 24, 1843. The third version was awarded to all those who participated in both of the aforementioned battles.

All Medals were issued named, except for those awarded to Indian naval personnel. There are a number of known naming styles that appear on the medals - some are impressed and others are engraved.
