History

The Second China War Medal was established by Royal Warrant on March 6, 1861. The Medal was awarded to Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers, and other ranks of the British Army, Indian Army, Royal Navy and Royal Marines in recognition of service in Second Opium War from 1857-1860.

The Medal could be awarded with clasps that denote participation in specific battles. Multiple clasps could be awarded to the same recipient, with 5 clasps being the most awarded to one recipient. The following 6 clasps were officially awarded:

1. "CHINA 1842"
2. "FATSHAM 1857"
3. "CANTON 1857"
4. "TAKU FORTS 1858"
5. "TAKU FORTS 1860"
6. "PEKIN 1860"

Medals awarded to troops of the British and Indian Armies were issued named, although a number of different naming styles exist. Medals awarded to members of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines were issued unnamed, but privately named examples may also be encountered.

There may be additional versions of the Medal that differ in size.
