The Silver Medal was designed by G.W. de Saulles. Most of these medals were awarded to troops of the Uganda Rifles and various Indian regiments. Only a few British officers and NCOs are among the recipients, and their medals would command a much higher price.

History

The East and Central Africa Medal was instituted in February 1899. It was awarded to British, Indian, and Native forces in military operations in Uganda between 1897 and 1899. Silver Medals were mostly awarded to British troops while Bronze Medals were awarded to Native troops and camp followers. The Medal was also awarded to 7 ladies.

4 possible clasps were authorized to be awarded with the Medal:

1. “UGANDA 1897-98”
2. “LUBWA'S”
3. “1898”
4. “UGANDA 1899”

The “LUBWA'S” clasp was always issued with the “UGANDA 1897-98” clasp. Few recipient did not receive a clasp.

A variety of naming styles were used and the value of the Medal may vary by recipient. The value for Medals awarded to European recipients is expected to exceed the value of Medals awarded to Native recipients, while the value for Medals awarded to ladies is expected to be up to three times the price of other Silver Medals.
