History

The South African Medal for Korea was instituted by Queen Elizabeth II by Royal Warrant in 1953. The Silver Medal was awarded to 800 personnel of the Union Defence Force who served in the contingent sent to the Korea theatre of war in recognition of 1 or more days of service in an active unit or 30 days of service on official tours between September 19, 1950, and July 27, 1953.

A bronze oak leaf clasp, worn on the ribbon, was awarded to recipients of the Silver Medal who received a mention in despatches.
