History

The Gulf Medal was established in 1992 to reward British Forces and some civilian personnel for service in the Gulf Wars in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia between 1990 and 1991. The Silver Medal was awarded for thirty days of continuous service in the Middle East between August 2, 1990, and March 7, 1991; sevendays of service between January 16, 1991, and February 28, 1991; or for service with the Kuwait Liaison Team during the Iraqi Invasion on August 2, 1990. Service cut short by death, disability, or capture inflicted whilst on active duty, or service recognized by another British honour for the same campaign also qualifies for the award of the Gulf Medal. It is estimated that over 45 000 Medals were issued.

The clasps “2 AUG 1990,” and “16 JAN-28 FEB 1991” are authorized for wear with the Medal. A silver rosette, denoting the award of a clasp, may be worn on the ribbon when the ribbon is worn alone.
