History

The Mercantile Marine War Medal was issued by the Board of Trade in 1919 to both Officers and men of the Mercantile Marine, otherwise known as the Merchant Navy, who served in at least one voyage through a danger zone during the First World War. While 250 000 Bronze Medals were struck, only 133 135 were issued as many foreign nationals who were entitled to receive the Bronze Medal did not claim them.

A variety of different naming styles were used and unnamed examples are known.
