History

The South Africa Medal was established by General Order in August 1880. The Medal was awarded to Officers and enlisted men of the British Army and Royal Navy, as well as to other colonial troops, for service in various campaigns in South Africa from 1877-1879.

The Medal could be awarded with clasps that denote service years. The following 7 clasps were officially awarded:

1. "1877"
2. "1877-8"
3. "1877-9"
4. "1877-8-9"
5. "1878"
6. "1878-9"
7. "1879"

The medals were issued named, but many different typefaces were used.

There may be additional versions of the Medal that differ in size.
