The Silver Medal was designed by R. Lowe. The value of the Silver Medal is expected to vary by recipient, with the price of Medals issued to members of the Scots & Welsh Guards, Parachute Regiment, and Royal Marines exceeding the price of Medals issued to other recipients.

History

The South Atlantic Medal was established by Command Paper 8601 on July 13, 1982. The Silver Medal was awarded to British forces for service in the South Atlantic for the liberation of South Georgia and the Falkland Islands from April 2 and July 12, 1982. A silver rosette, worn with the Medal, was awarded to personnel who provided 1 full day of service in combat zones in the Falkland Islands or South Georgia, while personnel who served for 30 days in an operational zone were only eligible for the Medal. It is estimated that 29700 Medals were issued.

A variety of different naming styles were used.
