The Life Saving Medal of the Order of St. John was established on December 15, 1874. The Medal is issued in a Gold, Silver, or Bronze grade to reward acts of gallantry in life-saving efforts. Recipients who have demonstrated an imminent risk of their own life in life-saving pursuits are also eligible for the award. The Gold Medal was not introduced until 1907.

Clasps are awarded to denote further acts of gallantry.

There are 3 versions of the Medal which vary by design and inscription.
