The Colonial Prison Service Long Service Medal was established in October of 1955. The Silver Medal is awarded to all ranks of assistant superintendent and below for 18 years of exemplary service. Service in prison services of other colonies and territories is also qualifying for the award. The Colonial Prison Service Long Service Medal was renamed the Overseas Prison Service Long Service Medal on June 14, 2012.

A clasp is awarded to denote a total of 25 years of service and a second clasp is awarded to denote a total of 30 years of service. A silver rosette may be worn on the ribbon to denote the award of a clasp when the ribbon is worn alone.
