The Royal Merchant Navy was established on June 1, 2005. The Medal is awarded to members of the Merchant Navy in recognition of meritorious service or significant contributions made to merchant shipping, operations, development, personnel, welfare or safety. Acts of bravery performed at sea are also eligible for the award.

A silver anchor emblem may be worn on the ribbon to denote acts of bravery at sea.

The Medal has an annual contingent of 15 male or female members and recipients are entitled to the post-nominal letters "MNM."
