History

The South Africa Permanent Force Long Service and Good Conduct Medal was instituted by King George VI on December 29, 1939, as a distinctive South African award version of the British military medal for Long Service and Good Conduct. The Silver Medal was awarded to Non-Commissioned Officers and other ranks of the South African Forces in recognition of 18 or more years of service. The Medal was discontinued in 1952 and replaced by the Union Medal.

A clasp was awarded to denote 30 years of service and the Medal features a fixed suspension bar with the Afrikaans and English inscription, "STAANDE MAG PERMANENT FORCE."

There are 2 versions of the Medal which depict different obverse variations of King George VI's effigy. The second version was implemented after the independence of South Africa in 1949.
