History

The Union of South Africa Meritorious Service Medal was instituted by Government Gazette on October 24, 1914. The Silver Medal was awarded to Non-Commissioned Officers and Warrant Officers of South Africa, Southern Rhodesia, and Swaziland. The Medal recognized 21 years or more of meritorious service in the Union Defence Forces and was often awarded upon retirement. Only 46 Medals were ever awarded.

The Medal was discontinued in 1952.

There are 2 versions of the Medal. The first depicts an obverse effigy of King George V, while the second features an obverse effigy of King George VI.
