History

The Condor Legion was a German military unit that fought alongside the Spanish nationalists in the Spanish Civil War of 1936 to 1939. It became known mainly for its air force detachment that used the conflict to develop new bombing tactics. These were then widely used during the Second World War.

The ground unit was known as Gruppe Imker (Group Beekeeper), and the Panzer units of Gruppe Imker were known as Gruppe Drohne (Group Drone).

Since the Germans were not supposed to be identified as such, they didn’t use any flags throughout the entire war. Exceptions to this rule were the car pennants.

The pennant for Chiefs of Staff is rectangular with horizontal stripes in red/yellow/red. The top stripe has the words “Legion Condor”, the middle one the word “Chef”, and the bottom one the letters “E.M.” (for Estado Mayor = General Staff) in black Latin letters.

Chief of Staff General von Richthofen had a pennant unique to him of the same design, but without any letters, and three gold-coloured four-pointed stars on the yellow field instead.
