History

The uniforms, headgear, and insignia of the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei or NSDAP) went through several design changes from 1933 until the end of the Second World War. Dr. Ley, originally the Gauleiter of Rheinland and later promoted to the position of chief of staff of Party Organization and Reich Organization Leader, was largely responsible for the NSDAP rank system and uniforms.

The standardized production and circulation of all NSDAP uniform garments, headgear, and insignia were overseen by the National Material Control Office (RZM or Reichszeugmeisterei). The RZM was created in July 1934, and it was located in Munich. From 1935 onward, all NSDAP uniform garments and insignia were legally required to feature an RZM control mark or tag, as well as a number mark on metal insignia or belt buckles. These marks indicate the authenticity of the object, the type of insignia or garment, and identify the manufacturer.

Prior to 1933, there were no standardized regulations concerning the design of NSDAP headgear. Most NSDAP personnel wore a kepi style of visor cap that was styled after the SA kepi cap design.

The rigid form of these kepi caps is unique, and the shape of the top is often referred to as a “coffee can” style top. While there were no official standards for NSDAP kepi visor caps, each cap features chin cords, buttons, ventilation holes, interior lining, and, at least since around 1931, a national eagle emblem insignia.

The caps may feature cord piping along the cap’s crown. The piping may be composed of thread in various colours, including gold, silver, and white. This piping was used to indicate the wearer’s rank within the NSDAP.

The chin cords are composed of twisted wire, and their colour, as well as the placement and number of knots on the cords were used to signify the wearer's ranks. There are also examples of NSDAP kepi's featuring chin strap made from leather.

The kepi was discontinued in January of 1934 with the introduction of the Visor Cap.
