    Both grades of the Submarine Clasp exist with variations of the reverse. So far, original pieces have only been found to be made out of zinc.


The Submarine Clasp was instituted by Grand Admiral Dönitz on May 15th, 1944, and was conferred upon U-Boat crewmen in recognition of their unwavering bravery and valour. Recipients were recommended for conferral by their commander. The necessary requirements are unknown.

This clasp is also known as the U-Boat Combat Clasp and the Submarine Front Clasp.

The initial clasp design was submitted by Wilhelm Ernst Peekhaus of Berlin.
