History

The Submarine Clasp was instituted by Grand Admiral Dönitz on May 15th, 1944, and was conferred upon U-Boat crewmen in recognition of their unwavering bravery and valour. Recipients were recommended for conferral by their commander. The necessary requirements are unknown.

This clasp is also known as the U-Boat Combat Clasp and the Submarine Front Clasp.

The initial clasp design was submitted by Wilhelm Ernst Peekhaus of Berlin.

The Silver Clasp was added as a grade on November 24, 1944, and was awarded to recipients of the Bronze Clasp who continued to display merit and valour within submarine services.
