History

The decoration was instituted by General Bernhard Waber. There are no known details regarding the institution. The plaque was awarded over 700 times.

There are two different types of this plaque, the second one having a slightly different inscription than the first one.
The first pattern plaque is rectangular with a raised edge, featuring a Luftwaffe eagle on top of a standing, downward pointing sword. To the left of the blade (as viewed) is the townhall of Breslau (Wrocław) and to the right the castle of Krakau (Kraków). The inscription at the bottom reads: for good effort / the commanding general / and chief of LGK VIII.
The reverse is semi-hollow. The plaque was awarded with a document. Both plaque (on the reverse) and document feature the same award number.

The second pattern is identical, except that instead of the word "Breslau" it reads "Schlesien" (Silesia), and instead of "Krakau" it reads "Gen.Gouv." for Generalgouvernment (occupied Poland).

The plaque is known to have been awarded to women (Luftwaffe signals auxiliaries).

The German title of this award is "Ehrenplakette des Luftgaukommandos VIII".
