The Gendarmerie High-Altitude Mountain Guide Badge was instituted following the annexation of Austria, and conferred upon Officers and Sergeants of the Gendarmerie in Gau Tirol and Gau Vorarlberg who demonstrated expert mountaineer skills.

Some sources claim that the award was issued rarely and was discontinued in 1941.
