History

The Cross was established by Kaiser Wilhelm II on the occasion of his 1898 visit to Palestine, on which he personally inaugurated the Luther Church of the Redeemer in Jerusalem.

The Cross was conferred upon individuals who accompanied the Kaiser on his travels and attended the inauguration of the church.

Fewer than 200 examples of the cross were manufactured.
