History

The Medal was established by the Senate of the Free City of Frankfurt and was conferred upon veterans of the Rhine Army, who participated in the campaign against Denmark in the First Schleswig War. The war was rooted in a dispute over which nation would control the Duchies of Schleswig and Holstein. The conflict occurred between the years 1848 and 1851, and ultimately resulted in a Danish victory, but in 1864, the Second Schleswig War erupted.
