History

This Badge was instituted by Reichswehrminister Otto Karl Geßler on August 1, 1920, and was conferred upon military personnel who served on airships for at least one year during the First World War. However, if an individual had demonstrated outstanding merit during the course of the war, the length of service requirement was waived. Formed Prisoners of War who had been captured after their airship had been downed were also eligible to receive the Award, regardless of how long they had served.

The Award could be conferred upon former Officers, Deck Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers and enlisted men.

The Badge was produced by numerous manufactures and comes in a variety of designs, as veterans were required to purchase their own decorations.

The badges were produced using a variety of materials including: Bronze, white metal.
