History

The Royal Mint has been producing coins for over 1100 years. Around 1279, the Mint was located in the Tower of London, and the minting process became finalized in the 17th century.

Following the Napolonic Wars, the Mint was relocated to Tower Hill in the early 1800s. The machinery became modernized over the 100 years of producing with new coin presses, changes to the physical building, and the use of electricty overtook steam power.

Due to the demand of coins and medals from overseas and at homes, a new headquarters was built in Llantrisant, South Wales. It was opened by the Queen on December 17, 1968.

The Royal Mint creates 90 million coins and blanks weekly - roughly 5 billion coins a year. While coins and medals for the United Kingdom are the Mints first priority, they also make coins for 60 other countries.
