History

The Educational Medal, or Elmi Medal (Midal il Ilmi), is believed to have been instituted during the Qajar era in 1922 or 1925. The award may also be known as the Medal for Scientific Merit. The Medal was retained and modified during the Pahlavi dynasty and is associated with the Order of Arts and Science. The Medal is awarded in 2 Classes to recognize Iranian citizens for educational or scientific meritorious service. School principles and deputies, instructors of primary schools and students may be recognized by the award. Foreign scientists or educators may also be eligible or the award.

The II Class Medal is composed of bronze and was awarded in recognition of service to education or science, which while still exemplary, is still less than that required to merit the award of the I Class Medal.

The reverse features the motto of the Ministry of Education inscribed in Persian which translates to "He Who Knows is Mighty."

There may be additional versions of the II Class Medal which vary by composition.
