History

The Order of Abd al-Karim Qasim was instituted by Prime Minister Abd al-Karim Qasim in 1958. The Order was conferred in 2 Classes to both military and civil personnel in recognition of exceptional service to Iraq. The Order may also be known as the Order of the Republic, but more research is necessary. The Order was discontinued in 1962.

The I Class Badge features an Arabic inscription on the obverse which translates to "The Order of the Republic 1377H" and "The People."

There are 2 versions of the I Class Badge to denote awards made to civil and military personnel. The I Class Badge issued to military recipients is believed to feature swords.
