The Military Service Medal was established by Shaikh 'Abdullah III in 1962. The Medal is awarded in 3 Classes to members of the Kuwait Defence Forces, Kuwait Police Forces, or Kuwait paramilitary forces in recognition of distinguished service. Civilians serving in any of the qualifying fields listed above or attached to them may also be eligible for the award.

The I Class is composed of gold.

A gold star emblem is authorized for wear on the ribbon of the I Class Medal.

The obverse features an Arabic inscription which translates to "Kuwait" and "The Medal for Military Service." There is also Arabic script on the reverse which translates to "Established by Law No.17 of the Year of 1962."
