History

The Hero of the Kyrgyz Republic (Znak Ak Shumkar) was established by Presidental Law on April 16, 1996, as the Republic's highest honour. The Order as a title of distinction to Kyrgyzstan citizens in recognition of exceptional services provided to the state and the people of Kyrgyzstan. Qualifying service includes accomplishments of a heroic feat performed in the name of the Kyrgyz Republic. The honour is commonly conferred upon personnel who are nationally celebrated, such as Kyrgyzstan artists and cosmonauts; and has only been awarded approximately 24 times as of 2014.

The Order may be presented more than once and recipients of the award are also entitled to a monetary stipend and social privileges.
