History


The Accession Medal (Midalat al-'Atala'at al-'Arash) was instituted by Sultan Qaboos in 1970 in commemoration of the Sultan's accession to power. The Medal is awarded to members of the Oman Armed Forces, Police and Intelligence Services, and members of the Royal Family who were involved in Sultan Qaboos' accession to the throne on July 23, 1970. It is estimated that approximately 6000 Medals were issued.

The obverse features an inscription in Arabic, translated as "Sultan Qaboos bin Said" and "Sultan of Oman". The reverse features an inscription and is dated "1390AH" (1970 AD) in Arabic numerals.
