The Medal of Merit was established by King Faisal idn Abdulaziz by Council of Minister Decisions on March 20, 1971.

The Medal is awarded to civilians in 3 Grades in recognition of services provided to the state. All initial appointments are made to the III Class, with the subsequent award of a higher class being made only upon promotion.

The III Class is composed of bronze.

The III Class Bronze Medal features an Arabic inscription on the obverse which translates to "Kingdom of Saudi Arabia."
