The National Military Decoration was established by King Saud idn Abdulaziz in 1955. The award may also be known as the Military Star. The Star was awarded to military personnel of the rank of lieutenant-colonel or above in recognition of great service demonstrated in the field. Other meritorious deeds may also be eligible for the award.

The Star features an Arabic inscription on the obverse which translates to "The National Military Decoration."

Recipients of the Star were entitled to a monthly stipend of 100 Saudi Riyal ($25).
