The Australian Active Service Medal was introduced on 13 September 1988 and was conferred upon members of the Australian Defence Force to recognize service in a military campaign.

The Medal is awarded with a clasp that features the name of the action or its location. The clasps include: Kuwait, Cambodia, Balkans, Vietnam 1975, East Timor, Somalia, Namibia, Rwanda, ICAT, IRAQ, IRAQ 2003, Sierra Leone, Middle East.

The obverse of the medal depicts the Federation Star surrounded by a laurel wreath. The reverse of the medal features the inscription ‘FOR ACTIVE SERVICE’.
