History

The Conspicuous Service Cross was instituted on 18 October 1989. It is awarded to Australian Armed Forces personnel who demonstrate exception devotion to duty and successfully utilise their skill, judgment, and devotion in non-warlike situations. All ranks are eligible to receive this award.

The medal is in the shape of a Maltese Cross with fluted rays between the cross arms. The centre of the medal features the Crux Constellation within laurel wreaths. The reverse of the cross has a blank horizontal panel for the recipient's name. The Crown of St. Edward surmounts the medal and attaches to a straight ribbon bar. The ribbon is yellow with diagonal green stripes.

If a recipient receives the Cross again, it is issued in the form of a nickel-silver clasp that is superimposed with a replica of the Cross, flanked by laurel leaves.

The award may be issued posthumously. Recipients are entitled to the postnominal letters ‘CSC’.
