History

The Meritorious Unit Citation was introduced in 1991 and is awarded to military units that render outstanding service in warlike operations.

The Citation comes in the form of a silver-coloured rectangular frame which surrounds a golden yellow ribbon. In the centre of the ribbon, a small sterling silver Federation Star may be attached.

Personnel who were members of the unit when the citation is awarded wear it with a Federation Star attached to the centre of the ribbon, and continue wear the insignia after they leave the unit. Personnel who join the unit after the citation is awarded wear may wear the insignia without a Federation Star, but they are not permitted to wear the insignia after they leave the unit.

If a unit receives the citation again, it receives a Certificate of Citation rather than additional insignia. Only one insignia per citation is permitted for wear by a member of a unit, and only one Federation Star is worn per citation, regardless of how many times the unit has been awarded the citation.
