History

A.C.T. Emergency Medal was introduced in March 2004 by the government of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), the federal district in southeastern Australia, and was conferred upon individuals in recognition of their service during the bushfires of January 2003. The Medal was awarded to the uniformed members of the following services: the ACT Fire Brigade, the Australian Federal Police, the ACT Ambulance Service, and the ACT State Emergency Service. In addition, it was also awarded to some members of the New South Wales Police Force who bravely served the community of Canberra during the bushfires.

In order to qualify for the Award, an individual had to have completed at least 8 hours of service that focused on suppressing the bushfire or evacuating and protecting the population, during the period from 8 January 2003 to 19 January 2003. While undertaking their duty, the individual had to demonstrate professional and dedication to the work.

The obverse of the medal features a Canberra royal bluebell, surrounded by lines that resemble wind and fire.
