History

The New Zealand Armed Forces Medal was established by Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of New Zealand by Royal Warrant on May 6, 1985. It was created to recognise commissioned Officers of the military who served for 15 years. The award recognises service dating back to 1977.

Clasps are awarded for each additional 15 years of service. For each clasp, a silver rosette is added to the ribbon when worn alone.

The Silver Medal features the recipient's name engraved on the rim.
