History

The New Zealand Defence Meritorious Service Medal was established by Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of New Zealand by Royal Warrant in 2013 to replace the New Zealand Meritorious Service Medal. The New Zealand Defence Meritorious Service Medal was created to recognise any form of meritorious service. It may be awarded to all employees of the New Zealand Defence Force, including civilian staff. It may also be awarded posthumously.

Clasps in the shape of a single New Zealand fern frond are awarded for further qualifying service.

The reverse displays an inscription in both English and Maori, and the recipient’s name is engraved on the rim.
