This Medal was awarded by the Governor-General of Indochina to members of the Native Guard for 15 years of meritorious service. A maximum of 600 medals were awarded annually to native members of the Guard, in addition to a maximum of 80 Medals that were awarded to European staff.

There are three versions of the Medal. The first version has a reverse inscription that translates to “Honour and Fatherland, Native Guard,” the second version has a reverse inscription that translates to “Honour and Fatherland, Civil Guard,” and the third version has a reverse inscription that translates to “Indochinese Guard.” All three versions have an obverse inscription that translates to “French Indochina.”
