This medal is a British honour that was conferred upon members of the South African Military in recognition of involvement in the First Matabele War (1893), Second Matabele War: Rhodesia (1896) and Mashonaland (1897).
The inscription differs based on what campaign the recipient was involved in. A clasp was issued depending on the campaign the recipient was involved in. A total of 4 clasps were issued: 1) Matabeleland 1893; 2) Rhodesia 1896;3) Mashonaland 1897; 4) Mashonaland 1890.
