This medal was conferred upon members of the South African Defence Force for service in the Commandos, the rural defence unit of the South African Defence Force.
It was initially reserved for Officers from 1970 to 1975, but it then awarded to all Officers from 1975 to 1993.
Upon the abolition of the Jack Hindon Medal in 1975, the Danie Theron Medal replaced this award.
