This medal was conferred upon Boer War veteran Officers in recognition of meritorious service during the Anglo-Boer War (1899 - 1902).

It is also known as "Dekoratie voor Trouwe Dienst."

A total of 655 medals were awarded between 1921 and 1946. The final decoration was awarded on January 22, 1947.
