This star was conferred upon members of the South African Prisons Service in recognition of notable, exceptional gallantry or that have risked/lost their life attempting to save others.

There are approximately 12 recipients of this award.

It was discontinued in 1980 and replaced by the South African Prisons Service Cross for Valour (Diamond and Ruby classes).
