The Medal of Merit was instituted in 1875 by Sultan Sayyid Barghash bin Said.
The medal was originally the fifth grade of the Order of the Brilliant Star of Zanzibar. Later it was awarded as a separate decoration. It was awarded in recognition of civilian service to Zanzibari subjects and foreigners in government employ.
The medal is also known as "Sultan of Zanzibar's Medal of Merit".
