History

The João VI Proclamation Medal (Medalha Comemorativa da Aclamação de D. João VI) was authorized by royal Portuguese decree to commemorate the proclamation of the infant João VI as King of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves on February 6, 1818.

This Medal was struck two years later of his coronation, and it was the second official issue made in Rio de Janerio after the Portuguese crown moved its seat to Brazil.

The Order was authorized with three grades: Gold Medal, Silver Medal, and Bronze Medal. These were granted to members of the royal family, Portuguese and Brazilian royal courts, and loyal military personnel.
