History

The Medal for Yungay (Medal for the Battle of Yungay) was authorized a couple of months after the Star by Yungay. It was established by the Chilean government to reward military personnel who participated in the Battle of Yungay in 1839, when Peruvian President Santa Cruz was defeated by Chilean forces under the command of General Manuel Bulnes during the Confederation War (1836-39 ).

The Medal was authorized in Gold and Silver. The Gold Medal was awarded to Officers and high ranks, while the Silver Medal was awarded to enlisted men.
