The city of Valparaiso awarded this Medal (Medalla de Valparaiso a sus Valientes) to its military personnel who participated at the War of the Pacific (1879-1883). Valparaiso was the control base of the Chilean navy during this war.

The Medal was authorized with two grades conferred upon the members of the Naval Artillery Civic Battalion, the Valparaíso Regiment and the Valparaíso Battalion.

The reverse inscription varies according to the name of the unit to which the recipient belonged.
