History

The Pavón Medal (Medalla por Pavón) was established by the Argentinian Confederation to reward General Bartolome Mitre and his men who defeated Justo José de Urquiza, Unitarian president of Argentina, in the battle of Pavón on September 17, 1861. This battle was a decisive engagement in terms of consolidation of the nation.

This Medal features an obverse inscription that translates to "Battle of Pavón September 17, 1861” and a reverse inscription that can be translated to “He Fought with Glory for Freedom of The Republic of Argentina.”
