The Medal for the Liberator (Medalla del Libertador) was authorized in 1825 by the new independent government of Bolivia, led by General Santa Cruz, in commemoration of the great revolutionary hero Simón Bolivar.
Simón Bolivar (1783-1830) was a military and political leader in Latin American during the Wars of Independence, who led the most important battles for the independence of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela and Peru.
They were authorized thirty Gold Medals, one-hundred-eighty Silver Medals, and it was made a unique Gold Medal with Diamonds. It is not clear who the recipient of these medal were.
The Medal in Gold with Diamonds was conferred upon Simón Bolivar. However, after his death the Medal returned to Bolivia, as he will stood. Currently, this Medal is kept in the vaults of the Central Bank of Bolivia.
The Medal features a reverse inscription that can be translate to "The Bolivar Republic in Gratitude to the Hero Who Named we Shared."
A copy of this Medal is wore by the President of Bolivia in presidential ceremonies.
