History

The Order of Military Merit (Orden al Mérito Militar) was instituted by the Bolivian government on February 5, 1927 and it was modified on November 16, 1932. The Order was created into the Military Organic Law to reward meritorious actions in time of war; for information regarding to decorations in time of peace, see "Cross for Constancy" (BOL141.)

The Order is awarded to Bolivian military personnel, exclusively.

On the regulation of 1932, the design of the Order was modified, and the grades were changed.

The Order is classified into two types that are based on the modifications of 1932. Type I includes the grades of the Order until 1932, while Type II includes the Order after 1932 to present.

In Type I, the Order consists of seven grades; I Class Collar of Honor, II Class Gold Star, III Class Silver Cross, IV Class Silver Cross, V Class Bronze Cross, VI Class Bronze Medal, and VII Class Iron Star. In Type I, there are not Breast Stars.

The Order features the same obverse and reverse inscriptions that translate to "Army of Bolivia, to Merit."

The IV Class Silver Cross features blue enamels.
